Dirac Live

Microphone not available as recording device (Windows)

When Dirac Live doesn’t recognize your microphone as a recording device and you have made sure the microphone is otherwise functional (e.g. shows up as input option for other software), it means that the WASAPI recording device fails to initialize at the mic-selection step, whether that's an audio interface's own input (e.g. MOTU M Series "Mic In 1-2") or a standalone USB mic connected directly to the computer (e.g. UMIK-1).

Note: This might show up with the following error message.

Msg 160 error code 600007
"Connecting to the selected microphone failed with error code "XXXXXXXX".
If the error code is not informative, the microphone may have been disconnected or deactivated. Check the physical connection that is available to the operating system."

Solution:

  1. Press the Windows key, type "environment variables," and open "Edit the system environment variables."

  2. Click "Environment Variables..."

  3. Under "User variables," click "New..."

  4. Variable name: DAUDIO_WASAPI_NON_EXCLUSIVE

  5. Variable value: ON

  6. Click OK to save, then OK again to close.

  7. Fully restart Windows (not just sign out), then retest.

If the environment variable DAUDIO_WASAPI_NON_EXCLUSIVEalready exists, simply set to ON and restart windows.

Note: This is separate from the two Windows "Exclusive Mode" checkboxes in the microphone's Advanced properties, toggling those does not resolve this error.
